How to Help Morning Sickness
60My sister in law suffered from morning sickness with each of her pregnancies.
My eldest niece was staying for the weekend and she suddenly got up and ran to the bathroom where she pretended to be sick before walking back into the room and calmly saying, ”sorry about that, it’s just morning sickness!”
Yes, you’ve guessed it her mom was pregnant at the time.
I was really lucky when I was pregnant as I only had morning sickness once in the entire pregnancy and that was easily explained.
I had been on holiday in New Zealand, staying with my parents and left early in the morning where it was lovely and crisp. Landing in Brisbane 8.30am and it was hot and humid, the humidity was somewhere in the 80s I seem to recall and I walked into our house and then had to run to the bathroom – yuk!
When I was managing a health shop we had a lot of people coming in and complaining of morning sickness and the best success I’ve heard of is with ginger. I have also passed this on to some of my less-fortunate than me friends who did have morning sickness.
One possible cause of morning sickness is a lack of B complex vitamins, this leads people to assume that taking a B complex will help, but this is not always the case. In some cases taking a B complex can exacerbate the situation. Having said this B6 is put into a lot of successful anti-morning sickness formulas so it is definitely worth trying, especially when combined with ginger.
If the sickness occurs on waking then having a dry biscuit such as a ginger nut or morning coffee with a cup of tea before rising is a great idea. In fact a cup of tea in bed may be one of the reasons that I didn’t get afflicted with morning sickness…I am very fortunate in that my hubby brings me a cup of tea in bed every morning, this means that I’m not jumping out of bed as soon as I wake up which can exacerbate morning sickness.
Teas that you can drink which are reputed to help include red raspberry tea which is also a fantastic tea to help strengthen your reproductive system which makes it a great tea to drink throughout pregnancy. Peppermint tea is also great for morning sickness, although you should avoid taking peppermint in capsule form or using the essential oil during pregnancy as they are too strong and can cause miscarriage.
I have mentioned Ginger already and ginger tea is a great remedy. Ginger can also be taken in a tablet or capsule form, but I have found that eating or drinking it seems to work best. Make sure you have a little bag of crystallized ginger or some Ginger nut biscuits with you at all times!
Another way of keeping morning sickness at bay is by eating small portions often. This may be one of the reasons that I didn’t get morning sickness as I would be hungry every 3 hours and would have something to eat then which meant that I no longer ate big meals three times a day. This also helps to keep your energy levels up, which is always good news!
