Did you know that the umbrella has a whole month dedicated to it? Yes, March is National Umbrella month. We use our umbrellas regularly to give us shelter, but how much do we really know about them? I feel like they’ve been around forever and it turns out I’m right!

Umbrellas have been around for thousands of years. The Terracotta Army are even holding an umbrella which would be pretty amazing to see. Ancient Greeks, Egyptions, Romans, Chinese and Indians all have umbrellas in their culture.

Maybe if we all offered to share our umbrellas we’d all get along! Okay maybe I’m being a bit frivolous with that statement, but it appears as though the humble umbrella has bridged the gap between nationalities, religion and politics.

We’re a five umbrella house, although one of them is not in good shape and is only used as a last resort!

Like our meals though I have found that umbrellas are becoming more and more upsized, it used to be that you would just purchase a ‘normal’ sized umbrella and that would be fine.   Then along came the golf umbrella and before you know it non-golf playing people everywhere are using them in everyday life.  

I must admit umbrellas have come a long way from the standard collapsible umbrella that you could keep in your bag.    They have become almost like pieces of art and can make quite a fashion statement!

Nature, famous pieces of art and more have all adorned umbrellas in an attempt to make a statement as people ‘brave’ the wet outdoors.

Umbrella is actually from the Latin word umbra which means shade, umbrellas and parasols were essentially the same thing until fabrics evolved and we started to produce waterproof ‘personal shades’ which we called umbrellas and used in the rain.   Parasols are usually made from non-waterproof material and are used (as their name suggests) to protect from the sun.

In recent years there has been an ever growing market for children’s umbrellas gone are the days when a raincoat and boots were all that a child needed, now they need their own umbrellas to take to school!   There are animal umbrellas, Disney umbrellas, flower umbrellas and dinosaur umbrellas.    Just about anything that your child could want seems to be available on an umbrella…..the only problem is that children are children and umbrella spokes just seem to break far too easily!!

My daughter has had a Dora umbrella, a bumble bee umbrella, a Bratz umbrella and I really thought she’d want a Hannah Montana one, but she’s actually decided on an ‘adult’ black umbrella because she’s not a little girl anymore!   (For the record, she’s 8!)
